Changing the Face of Engineering
A ‘one size fits all’ approach has never been part of the Jonassen Industrial Projects Limited (JIPL) philosophy. At JIPL the focus is on quality engineering drawn from many years of experience, where the engineers take pride in their ability to cross transfer technologies and ideas, and to provide innovative, practical and effective engineering solutions.
In conjunction with Metal Skills Ltd, one of the largest and most sophisticated sheet metal fabricators in New Zealand, JIPL have completely re-thought how to manufacture process ovens by utilising innovative designs and the latest in fabrication technology.
“We have done a complete re-design of our successful existing ovens to retain the sophisticated European technological elements, but taken a more cost-effective, innovative approach in the way the ovens are physically constructed,” says managing director, Chris Jonassen. “The result is an extremely ‘low heat-loss’ oven utilising common, precision-made components.”
JIPL has developed a pioneering way of doing things where the client has more input, giving the client the opportunity to be more involved in terms of quality and assembly.
The new ‘modular’ oven designed by JIPL is providing an affordable, high quality option for a wide range of clients from a variety of industries both in NZ and particularly for export.
Essentially, the new concept features an interlocking, insulated panel system which incorporates integral structural supports, all internal ducting, roof explosion relief panels and insulated floor. The concept is also designed to incorporate JIPL’s highly effective, dual-action air-seals.
One big advantage is the oven can be produced as a ‘flat-pack’ for easy transportation and thus reduce export costs. By integrating the ducting and support structure within the whole oven, the labour content to install the oven is significantly reduced. It means that for many projects, a job supervisor is able to install the oven simply and efficiently utilising low skilled, local labour. The construction method also allows the oven to be installed in areas not normally accessible.
JIPL’s ovens are tailor-made to suit each client’s processing requirements, but the manufacturing, installation and operating costs have been significantly reduced.
For example, owners of large overhead-conveyor powder coating ovens would be surprised to know that 70-85% of their ovens’ operating cost is due solely to oven heat and air losses! JIPL therefore focused their design efforts to more than halve these losses. This gives customers a major operating cost saving – especially given rising fuel costs.
A major feature of precision manufacturing is oven construction quality and its sustainability – the oven can be taken apart and re-built, or modified, allowing flexibility for future growth or change of premises.
“Our in-house 3-D modelling, engineering capability, and over 50 years’ combined experience of industrial ovens means we can give each customer exactly what they need – at a lower cost, with lower processing costs, all in a high quality, long-life oven”, says Chris Jonassen.
Their new innovative method reduces the cost of manufacture and installation Ð and offers a significant difference in cost. At JIPL the focus is on design, resulting in far less time needed for assembly. JIPL’s designs and processes offer long term benefits – high energy efficiencies and lower maintenance requirements. These innovative methods bring the benefit of less maintenance, less energy and a wide range of operating efficiency; all resulting in less operating costs.
The net result is that the quality is second to none, rivalling the best in the world.
JIPL has also re-designed process tanks, high temperature heat treatment furnaces and a variety of process equipment to serve customers’ unique needs.
The Jonassen team offers real-world practicalities, vision, skill, knowledge, experience, and understanding to help you and your company to take the next step to a solid design with function, form and finesse.
