Backlighting added to mass flow and pressure instruments

Alicat Scientific has added backlighting as a standard feature on monochrome LCD displays for its core range of mass flow meters, mass flow controllers and pressure controllers. The backlighting illuminates Alicat’s full-information, menu-driven, multi-parameter LCD display screens for easy reading, regardless of lighting conditions. Though reliable and dependable, with low power consumption needs, monochrome LCD screen crystals lack strong contrast, meaning these screens are best read in well-lit situations. With the new illuminated display, users can toggle the backlight on and off at the press of the button for easier reading and programming in darker environments. The new feature now comes standard on most Alicat instruments with monochrome LCD displays. Illuminated Thin-film Transistor multi-colour display and display-free instrument options remain available to suit customer preference.

Flexibility with FactoryTalk Batch software

Industrial producers with batch applications can now create more flexible, reliable and productive operations with the latest release of FactoryTalk Batch software from Rockwell Automation. The software enhances scalability and responsive control of distributed, skid-level phases with the integrity of plant-level coordination, whilst delivering an improved, reliable user experience with built-in mobility. “Rather than trying to force-fit applications into rigid batch control systems, producers can now customise a modern batch system to their application’s needs,” said Dan UpDyke, Product Manager, Rockwell Automation. “These enhancements give batch producers greater flexibility when designing, operating and expanding batch systems. They also enable producers to use mobile devices for a more intuitive experience and improved workflows.” Integration with the SequenceManager solution from Rockwell Automation enables batch sequencing to occur at either the controller or server level. This allows machine builders to develop and deliver fully tested skids that end users can integrate into their batch process with minimal validation and commissioning effort. It also minimises the rework required when manufacturers with small, controller-based batch systems expand to larger, server-based batch systems. New mobile support can help create intuitive workflows, reduce procedural steps and increase collaboration. With mobile devices, workers no longer need to be bound to control rooms and fixed terminals. Instead, they can access real-time information, interact with processes and secure approvals from anywhere in a plant. A modern web interface also helps reduce the number of clicks required to access information.

NZ gluten-free boom prompts new testing service

New Zealand’s largest privately owned testing laboratory, Hill Laboratories, is offering a gluten testing service with the fastest turnaround-time in the Country. The company has introduced the service in response to the rapid increase in consumer demand for gluten free products, which according to Coeliac New Zealand Incorporated, is increasing in NZ by an estimated 26% annually. Technologist, Sam Marengo, said Hill Laboratories developed the test to ensure those purchasing gluten-free products can correctly label their gluten free foods for the benefit of consumers. “More and more Kiwi consumers are avoiding the ingredient due to gluten intolerance or simply dietary preference,” Marengo said. “As a result of more Kiwi’s going gluten free, manufacturers and retailers across the country are feeling the pressure to respond with gluten free products. “Supermarkets now dedicate whole aisles to gluten free products and more cafes and restaurants offer gluten free food. Marengo says the turnaround time for Hill Laboratories’ gluten testing service is 5 days, which is between 2 and 5 days faster than its competitors. “This service will enable manufacturers, retailers, local cafés and restaurants to accurately label their products and check for cross-contamination. “By utilising our gluten testing service, manufacturers, retailers, local cafés and restaurants across New Zealand can label their products appropriately, for this important gluten free audience.” Marengo said According to the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code, manufacturers who label foods “gluten free” must not contain detectable gluten (no more than three parts per million)2. “When a manufacturer tests with us, they can find out whether their food adheres to the Code, and therefore ensure they have the correct labelling,” Marengo said. “In turn, consumers can be sure that what they are purchasing is indeed gluten free and safe for them to eat.” Marengo was appointed to Hill Laboratories in […]

AccuPRO UV and white light meter combine sensors

The AccuPRO Series of digital radiometer/photometers measures and displays UV and white light readings simultaneously. The AccuPRO series includes two new models: the standard AccuPro (XP-2000) with a dual-wavelength sensor that measures both ultraviolet and visible light. The AccuPRO Plus (XP-4000) 3-in-1 multi-purpose sensor capable of measuring ultraviolet, visible and blue light. Both units comply with ASTM specifications for MPI and FPI, making them the ideal companion for NDT. The instrument has internal batteries that are charged by USB input. The portable, palm-sized units feature a large colour LCD screen, protective rubber housing and a three-way button interface which makes it fast and convenient to toggle between measurement modes. Overall accuracy is better than ± 5% per NIST standards. The AccuPro series is user-friendly and intuitive.

Fluke 3000 FC Series Wireless DC Clamps improve productivity

New high current and 4-20 mA dc current clamps speed troubleshooting through collaboration, regardless of location. Now added are two new dc current clamps to the Fluke Connect system of wireless test tools: the Fluke a3003 FC Wireless DC Current Clamp and the a3004 FC Wireless DC 4-20 mA Current Clamp. Both fully-functional current clamps can wirelessly send measurements to Fluke Connect enabled master units as well as the Fluke Connect mobile app so users can view measurements from multiple devices simultaneously, review equipment history, and share measurements with other team members for faster troubleshooting. The a3003 FC Wireless DC Current Clamp measures up to 2000 A dc making it ideal for very high dc current measurements typically found in utility and dc machine controller applications. It features a large jaw size (64 mm) for clamping around and measuring on large, high current conductors. The a3004 FC Wireless DC 4-20mA Current Clamp measures 4 to 20 mA signals without breaking the loop so process control technicians can make accurate measurements without interrupting the workflow. It features a detachable clamp with extension cable for measurements in tight locations. Both current clamps can record and store up to 65,000 measurements with the logging feature to isolate intermittent events or record fluctuations without even being there.

Maintenance supervisors can boost productivity?

The job of maintenance supervisors is to get the maintenance work completed on time, on budget and safely! They can be popular. They can be great communicators. They can be inspired trainers. They can be great repair people. But these things alone do not make successful maintenance supervisors. They are not successful maintenance supervisors unless they can keep the machines running, the fleet rolling and the occupants warm in the winter. When does an active supervisor look like when he is no longer bogged down in an office doing paperwork? Active supervision occurs when a supervisor spends substantial time on the shop floor helping workers solve problems. As strange as it might sound, on the psychological level a supervisor might have to be both mother (nurturing and supportive) and father (strict and tough) to members of the crew. Active supervision encompasses several roles: • Ongoing performance monitor: The supervisor knows how long each job should take and checks it periodically throughout the day. A four-hour job issued in the morning should be done by the lunch break. When the jobs fall behind, the experienced supervisor thinks about how best to intervene. In some cases it might be logistical help, helping with equipment, or providing guidance about how to proceed. • Paperwork compliance officer: The accuracy of all analysis is derived from the work order. If the work order is complete and accurate then decision-making and root cause analysis become dramatically easier. Supervisors audit paperwork and return it when it is deficient.
